September 2008
Vendy Awards
Sponsored by the Regional Plan Association, watch for details on their upcoming seafood festival. We’ll be shouldering the oyster end, and hope to have our oyster barge short, some documentation and a lot about oystering history in New York Harbor.   In 2007, we opened “Serving It Up on the City’s Cart Wheels: Pushcarts as New York’s Portable Food Supply” at the Vendor Project’s very own Vendy Awards. We had such a good time and learned so much, we’re expanding this examination of one of the most important, misunderstood and fun features of New York’s food distribution system. We’ll be posting the Vendy Awards schedule as it gets finalized.

2007-2008:
The Year of the Oyster Barge

This year’s major push is to secure, restore, and reopen in New York Harbor the last remaining oyster barge. These floating fish markets used to grace both shores of Lower Manhattan, canning, pickling and wholesale and retail selling oysters, one of the big harvests of the brackish waters of the Hudson, harbor, and Long Island Sound. Chances are good, but we need your financial (and other) support to make this happen, so let us know if you want more information on how you can help.
